Theology Lesson on a Country Road

Can I bring my bike?
is my only worry
in the midst of a brief
lesson on the afterlife.
My parents in the front seat
glance at each other,
not wanting to lie
but loathe to discourage
my pursuit of heaven.
Oh, look at the rainbow!
my mother diverts.
I gaze heavenward,
the uninterrupted blue sky –
no rain, no rainbow,
no answer, no bike,
only a crow perched on a creosote pole
meeting me eye for eye.

Retirement from a long career in nursing has surprised Kathleen Wedl with an unexpected explosion of creative passion. She had done some writing through the years, and now more urgently wishes to express herself in a relatable way that touches her audience.
