On the Trail

just outside the rainfly
a rouse of autumn leaf music
as the trail stands sentinel from sunrise to
sunset to sunrise once again, and again
a pair of hiking boots stand at ease
tongues out, laces undone
longing for the next step and a newborn day
the first day, and the next first day
and so on – this small adventure
a footslog to clarity
with life at the heart of it
